I. Live Stick - Full Contact / Traditional Stick-Fighting (download entry form)
Format:
- 1 > 2-Minute Round (One (1)- Thirty (30) second Time-out for each fighter)
- Continuous Round of “Controlled Contact” fighting as overseen by referee.
- Single Garotte/Baston/Stick
- Accumulation of points to decide winner
Officials:
One (1) Ring Referee
Three (3) Ringside Point Judges – Judges will score the match on a Ten (10) point must system.
One (1) Timekeeper
One (1) Scorekeeper
*Fighters will be allowed one (1) coach – Coaches are allotted one 30-second time-out for the round.
Ring:
15’ x 15’ – 20’ x 20’ (Depending on size of venue)
No points will be awarded if both fighters are out of ring.
Fighter can score on opponent if both feet are inside ring and opponent is retreating and completely out of ring.
Fighting Gear:
Garottes / Bastons / Sticks (Provided for Fight by Tournament Sponsor.)
Fighters must wear official Escrima/Kali/Arnis Stick-Fighting Headgear and Body armor. (No Exceptions)
Mandatory protective gear – Gloves, forearm – elbow – knee – shin pads/guards, shoes, groin protector, and mouthpiece.
*Fighters must wear mandatory Headgear, Body Armor, and Protective Gear / Gear must be approved by officials.
Scoring:
Point Judges will judge on the following criteria:
- Style: Form and execution of strike.
- Technique: Cleanliness of movement and intent of strike.
- Defense: Ability of fighter to defend him/herself
- Power: Forcefulness of strike within safety of each fighter.
- Control: Fighters ability to control opponent and flow of fight.
Each Point Judge will score fight on a Ten (10) point must system:
10 – 10 Round / Even
10 – 9 Round / Slight Edge
10 – 8 Round / Controlling Edge
10 – 7 Round / One Sided
Judges will focus on both fighters. Fighter with the most accumulated points from the round will be declared the winner of the match.
Legal Strike Zones:
- Front of cage/headgear
- Sides of headgear
- Top of headgear
- Body (any part of body armor except back)
- Weapon hand
- Check hand
- Leg (shin only – on protective gear)
* Disarm and/or lost of weapon will automatically forfeit two (2) points of fighters total accumulated score at the end of the match.
Illegal Strike Zones:
- Back of headgear
- Back of body
- Neck
- Legs (backside)
- Joints (knee / ankle)
- Groin
*Any strike to the back of the body, including the head area, legs, and also at knee’s & ankle’s is not allowed. Strikes in the frontal area between the waist and knee is not allowed.
Legal Offensive Techniques:
- Strikes with Garotte/Baston/Stick to legal strike zones. Punyo is allowed to front of cage/headgear. Dunggab (thrust) to body only.
- Disarm (removal of garotte from opponents posession)
Illegal Offensive Techniques:
- Dunggab (thrust strike) to any part of headgear.
- Agaws / Joint Locks
- Kicking or Tripping of any sort
- Punching with free hand
- Excessive Holding
- Sweeps / Hip Throws / Takedowns
- Hooking / Grabbing around head to strike with elbow or knee
- Hand checking to the face
- Strikes to back of body, head, and legs
- Intentional strikes to the throat or around the neck area
- In Tie-Up, more than two (2) consecutive hits from the same angle
- Excessive Force
- Continue fighting after referee has called “Break”
In violation of these Illegal Techniques:
1st Violation: fighter will be cautioned
2nd Violation: 1 point will be deducted and awarded to opponent
3rd Violation: fighter will be disqualified
For safety of fighters, contact will be observed closely. Fighters must abide at all times to the “Controlled Contact” Rule.
“Controlled Contact” Rule – Fighters will respect each other as brothers/sisters in Martial Arts. The fight in which they are commencing in is a test of their acquired skills and talents, not a venue for brutality. Fighters are allowed to exhibit power, speed, and accuracy within their strikes; however, they must limit their intention of bodily injury. Excessive force will be observed and determined by the Referee.
Tournament Rules:
In case of a tie, 1 – 30-second “Sudden Death” round will be given. An accumulation of points and fighters control of fight within this round will designate the winner.
In case of a Tie-Up:
Fighters will be given five (5) seconds to defend, disarm, strike.
Referee will call out the duration of the five (5) seconds. At the end of the time, fighters must abide to Referee’s instruction to “Break”.
If opponent falls to ground:
Fallen fighter has three (3) seconds to defend and recover.
Opponent is allowed to attack to legal strike zones with “Controlled Contact”.
Referee will call out the duration of the three (3) seconds. At the end of time, referee will intervene.
Fighters, coaches, and instructors will adhere to rules and judgments of referee at all times. Referee controls fight at all times. Disrespect to any official or use of foul or abusive language will not be tolerated. Any misconduct and/or unsportsmanlike conduct will lead to an immediate disqualification of (fighter, coach, and/or instructor) as necessary and match will be forfeited. If necessary, (fighter, coach, instructor, and/or spectator) will be removed from the tournament premises. You will be held responsible for your actions and remember that you not only represent yourself. You represent your school, organization, instructor, and teammates. Conduct yourself with respect and humbleness at all times. In critical situations where fighter, coach, and/or instructor gets out of control, the whole team and/or school organization from which he represents will be disqualified from the tournament and banned from competing in future events.
All official areas are restricted and off-limits to instructors, coaches, fighters, and tournament guest/spectators. Only the fighters that are called in with their coach and officials are allowed in or near all restricted official areas. Unauthorized personnel will be given two (2) warnings to vacate the restricted area, if they do not comply by the second warning they will be escorted out of the premises and/or their fighter will be disqualified.
The staging area will be adjacent to the fighting ring. It will be the fighters responsibility to stay with his weight and division group. Late arrivals and no-shows will be automatically disqualified.
Salutation – Fighters will stand at opposite ends of the fighting ring approximately ten (10) feet apart.
Fighters will do the following in order: Face the judges and referee and salute; and face each other and salute.
To Commence Fighting – The referee will bring his padded sibat in an upward motion and give the command “SIGE” then the fighters will start the fight.
Stopping the Bout – At any time during the match the referee may stop or intervene in the action of the bout by separating the fighters by the use of his sibat and calling “Break”. The time clock will continue to run.
Time Outs – The match will be stopped by the referee for any breakdown or adjustments of weapons and/or equipment, also for warnings given, and questionable calls that need to be discussed among judges and referee. The clock will also be stopped.
The tournament and event organizers, promoters, and directors reserve the right to change and/or modify the rules as necessary in order to preserve the safety of the participants, tournament officials/staff and spectators as approved by the Grandmaster / Head Official.

- Disarm (removal of garotte from opponents possession)
Illegal Offensive Techniques:
- Dunggab (thrust strike) to any part of neck area and headgear.
- Agaws / Joint Locks
- Excessive Holding
- Sweeps / Hip Throws / Takedowns
- Hooking / Grabbing around head to strike with elbow or knee
- Hand checking to the face
- Strikes to backside of head, body, and legs
- No holding of garotte with both hands to execute strikes or locks
- Intentional strikes to the throat or around the neck area
- In tie-up, more than two (2) consecutive hits from the same angle
- Excessive Force
- Continue fighting after referee has called “Break”
In violation of these Illegal Techniques:
1st Violation: Fighter will be cautioned

III. Solo Garotte - Point Fighting (download entry form)
Format:
- 1 > 3-Minute Round
- Continuous Round of “Controlled Contact” fighting as over seen by referee.
- Single Padded Garotte / Baston / Stick (Provided by tournament sponsor)
- Accumulation of first eight (8) points within the three (3) minute round to decide winner.
Officials:
One (1) Ring Referee
Three (3) Point Judges - judges to be spread out evenly around ring.
One (1) Timekeeper
One (1) Scorekeeper
*Head Official will determine outcome of ring decisions.
Ring:
15’ x 15’ – 20’ x 20’ (Depending of size of venue)
No points will be awarded if both fighters are out of ring.
Fighter can score on opponent if both feet is inside of ring. Feet are to be completely out of the ring, then the referee will stop the fight to reposition fighters and commence the bout. If fighters continue to step outside the ring, referee will issue two (2) warnings, after those warnings one (1) point will be taken away each time it occurs thereafter.
Fighting Gear:
Padded Garotte / Baston / Stick (Provided for fight by tournament sponsor.)
Fighters must wear mandatory official padded head gear with protective face shield. Other protective gear - Gloves, forearm-elbow- knee-shin pads / guards, shoes, groin protector, and mouthpiece.
Chest protector or protective vest is optional but recommended.
*Fighters are allowed to use any protective gear as he/she sees fit, however gear must be approved by officials.
*Fighters must provide their own mandatory equipment during their bouts or will not be allowed to compete.
Scoring:
Point Judges will judge on the following criteria:
- Style: Form and execution of strike.
- Technique: Cleanliness of movement and intent of strike.
- Defense: Ability of fighter to defend him/herself.
- Power: Forcefulness of strike within the safety zones of each.
- Control: Fighters ability to control opponent and flow of fight.
The referee may stop the bout at the scoring of each point(s) and obtain confirmation by any of the three judges before any points are awarded. Each Point Judge will score bout as he or she sees the fight but, majority of the three judges must agree that the points are awarded. The fighter scoring the first eight (8) points within the (3) minute bout wins the match. If time runs out prior to anyone scoring eight (8) points, the fighter with the majority of the points will be declared the winner of the match.
Legal Strike Zones:
- Front of cage/headgear = 2 points
- Sides of headgear = 2 points
- Top of headgear = 2 points
- Body (any part of body from waist up / except backside) = 2 points
- Weapon hand = 2 points
- Leg (knee down to ankle) = 1 point
Illegal Strike Zones:
- Back of headgear
- Back of body
- Neck
- Legs (frontal between waist and knee)
- Groin
*Any strike to the back of the body, including the head area, and strikes in the frontal area between the waist and knee is not allowed.
Legal Offensive Techniques:
- Strikes with padded Garrotte/Baston/Stick to legal strike zones.
Illegal Offensive Techniques:
- *Dunggab (thrust with end of weapon of any sort)
- *Kicking or Tripping of any sort
- Punching with free hand
- *Sweeps / Hip Throws / Takedowns / Wrestling
- Agaws / Joint Locks
- Holding / Grabbing around the different parts of the body to strike with padded stick, elbow, or knee
- Hand checking to the face or any area other than your opponents weapon hand
- Strikes to back of body
- *Intentional strikes to the throat or around the neck area
- Excessive contact force
- Continue fighting after referee has called “Break”
Note: Illegal Techniques listed with asterisk / fighter will automatically be disqualified.

IV. Caranza / Sayaw / Forms
- Open to all styles and forms.
- All weapons used must first be inspected and approved by officials.
- All bladed weapons must be dull-edged. No bladed weapon will be allowed to touch floor. Throwing of weapons is not allowed.
- Maximum performance time for each participant is two (2) minutes.
- Numbers will be drawn by each participant prior to start of division competition for order of performances.
- Music will not be allowed for use during performances.
- Prior to start of performances, all participants must salute the panel of judges and state their name, rank, name of school/instructor, and brief information on the carenza being performed.
- Each participant will be graded by a panel of three (3) judges with a scale of 5-10. An average of the three (3) judges scores will be taken to generate a final score.
- Participants will be judged on the following criteria:
Style: Timing, Rhythm, and Fluidity
Power: Strength and emphasis in movement
Balance: Not only in movement but in mind and body
Execution: Confidence in technique
